small animal massage therapy & wellness at your location in Los Angeles

All dogs and cats residing in the City of Los Angeles must be spayed or neutered unless they meet certain medical criteria, are active show or service dogs, or are licensed for breeding purposes. Stiff fines and penalties can be assessed for persistent failure to comply. If you adopted your dog or cat from an animal shelter, state law requires that they be spayed or neutered before you will be allowed to take them home unless there is a valid medical reason for delaying the surgery. Section 53.15.2 of the LAMC.

Please sign this petition to support Non-Surgical Sterilization.

Imagine being able to sterilize your dog or cat without surgery or anesthesia, but with a simple injection.
While a sterilization injection is not available yet, it will be. WHEN is a matter of how much the public pressures pharmaceutical companies, scientists, regulators and funders into developing the right tools.
Join the Alliance for Contraception in Cats and Dogs (ACC&D), the ASPCA and Petfinder.com in endorsing this petition by declaring your support now! Your signatures and comments will be delivered to key targets to stimulate funding, research and development, approval and distribution of these life-saving tools.

For 53 years, the Pet Assistance Foundation has been helping low income, disabled and seniors pay for spaying and neutering pets. They are an all-volunteer organization that has branches from Antelope Valley down to south San Diego.  The Pet Assistance Foundation pledges money to carefully-screened vets who are low-cost for spay/neuter procedures.

Pet Assistance Foundation is here to help you understand that:

*No female dog or cat need have even a single litter. Veterinarians recommend spaying them before they come into heat, as a precaution against reproductive cancers. Puppies and kittens can be altered as early as 8 weeks of age. Cats should be spayed no later than the age of five months. Dogs should be spayed before six months of age. Spaying after the first heat can cost more.

*Male dogs and cats do not lose their masculinity when altered. They are happier, healthier, and better companions. They are less frustrated, less inclined to roam or run away, and will never develop prostate tumors. Male dogs and cats should be altered by 6 to 7 months of age, if not sooner.

*Cats and dogs do not get "fat and lazy" after altering. Obesity is caused by overfeeding and insufficient exercise.

*You will never regain the cost of your "purebred" dog if you breed her. The average cost of rearing a litter of puppies to an adoptable age of 8 to 12 weeks, along with the prenatal and post-natal veterinarian services, far exceed any profit you will earn.

*A dog or cat in heat or pregnant can be spayed. There is no reason to bring unwanted puppies and kittens into the world when eight out of ten pets are killed because there are no homes.

*If you illustrate the "miracle of birth" with a litter of kittens or puppies, you are lying to your children. What kind of miracle is it that condemns over 500,000 loving pets to death each year in California alone?

The Sam Simon Foundation mobile clinic
provides FREE spay and neuter surgeries to dogs and cats belonging to low-income families of Los Angeles city residents.
To make an appointment for free spay/neuter for your dog or cat, please call 1-888-DOG-SPAY (1-888-364-7729).
Their Assistance Dogs Program rescues dogs from animal shelters and humane societies to become Hearing Dogs for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, or Senior Dogs for Senior Assisted Living Homes. Dogs that do not complete training are adopted out as “Career Change Dogs” to families who would like a nice companion.

Actors and Others for Animals is a California 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion of the humane treatment of animals. Their main mission is to curb the pet overpopulation problem by subsidizing spay/neuter surgeries. Together with other vital services, they are there to help pet guardians living on a low and/or fixed income care for their beloved companions.

The Lange Foundation was founded in 1993 by Gillian Lange, recipient of the 1980 City of Los Angeles St. Francis of Assisi Award for her rescue work with impounded pets since 1974. She founded Amanda Foundation in 1975, and to date the two Foundations have rescued and placed over 13,000 cats and dogs who would otherwise have been destroyed at shelters.

Boycott Puppy and Me Pet Store - Sherman Oaks

Puppy and Me is a pet store in Sherman Oaks, CA that has been found to obtain their dogs from large-scale, commercial breeding facilities in the Midwest (puppy mills). The breeding dogs are caged for most or all of their lives and bred repeatedly, often producing sickly puppies that are sold for large sums of money. Reputable, humane breeders do not sell to pet stores. Peaceful, storefront demonstrations have been taking place at Puppy and Me in hopes they will offer dogs from shelters and rescue groups instead.

The use of animals in the circus is an unnecessary and inhumane practice that is harmful to both the animals and the public. Wild animals are trained to perform unnatural tricks to entertain crowds through the use of barbaric tools - including bullhooks, chains, and electric prods. These tricks are unnatural, frightening, and even painful; but the industry's mantra is "the show must go on."

AnimalWork.org, the internet's first animal-friendly jobsite.

At AnimalWork.org, they celebrate animals by donating a portion of every sale to animal rights and rescue organizations. The business motive behind this is simple: The goals of an animal non-profit organization and an animal job board are aligned- when non-profits are doing well, there are more animal jobs in the industry, which sustains their job board, and everybody wins.

Tippi Hedren Presents The SHAMBALA PRESERVE

The Roar Foundation, of which Tippi Hedren serves as president, maintains Shambala. They educate the public about exotic animals, and advocate for legislation to protect them.
Shambala is the only wild animal preserve of its kind in the United States. Since 1972, this unique 80 acre wildlife habitat has provided a haven for endangered exotic big cats. Currently, almost 70 animals live at Shambala, including African lions, Siberian and Bengal tigers, leopards, servals, mountain lions, bobcats, a lynx, a Florida Panther, a snow leopard, a cheetah, and an African Elephant.
The Shambala Preserve is open to the public one weekend a month by advance reservation only. An afternoon safari costs $35 a person. See their Safari page for a schedule and mail-in reservation form.

The STAND Foundation is a small 501(c)(3) animal charity run by volunteers.

The STAND Foundation does four things with the safety, health and comfort of the animals as their paramount concern.

1. Provide basic aid for dogs & cats belonging to homeless people.

2. Improve the living conditions of neglected guard dogs.

3. Provide basic help for independent, "indie", non-hoarding rescuers who take the lead on their projects but who need access to spay/neuter certificates, shelter bail cards, pallets of high quality dog food, cat food & litter, and funding for basic services like spay-neuter, flea medicine, et al.

4. Develop creative programs to fill the under-served, or completely neglected, needs of fellow rescuers.

PAWS/LA exists to enhance the quality of life of people living with a disabling life-threatening or terminal illness by empowering them to keep and care for their pets.

DogsInDanger.com believes in the power of compassion, and that Americans would do more to help and adopt shelter dogs, if only they knew how many dogs shelters euthanize. They have chosen a path of technology as a means of connecting these scared, abandoned shelter dogs with the loving homes they deserve. As a nonprofit organization, they seek no other gain except for the happiness we see in the face of a dog as he faithfully walks out through the shelter doors, in perfect step with his loving new family. Their ultimate goal is to see a day where healthy and treatable animals are no longer killed by their most trusted friends.

American Partnership For Pets
The American Partnership for Pets is an unprecedented team of leading veterinary, humane, animal control and fancier organizations, plus a growing number of community partners, that have set differences aside and united to speak with one voice on behalf of our nation's homeless and unwanted animals.

The United Animal Nations
"Making a World of Difference for the Animals"
United Animal Nations was founded in 1987 by a small group of humane movement workers with more than 120 years of aggregate experience, who wanted to save forgotten animals:
  • animals left behind during disasters because people shelters wouldn’t take them in
  • animals whose low or no-income guardians couldn’t afford lifesaving veterinary care for them
  • animals rescued by grassroots groups or individuals doing good work in their communities with not enough support
  • mares and their foals abused and slaughtered for the cruel manufacture of the drug Premarin
  • animals killed for human entertainment such as in pigeon shoots, dog fights and cockfights

Today, the situation facing wild orangutans is far worse than in 1971 when OFI founder, Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas,
first began her studies. As a result of poaching and habitat destruction, orangutan populations are on the edge of extinction and could be completely gone in the next five to 10 years. Understanding is the first step to action. As President of OFI, Dr. Biruté Galdikas has studied orangutans longer than any other person in human history and has worked ceaselessly to save orangutans and forests, and to bring orangutans and their plight to the attention of the world.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) works to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animals, protecting wildlife habitats, and assisting animals in distress. They seek to motivate the public to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote animal welfare and conservation policies that advance the well-being of both animals and people.

Fences for Fido improves the quality of life for dogs living outdoors by removing chains, building fences, providing shelters, offering spay/neuter, and raising awareness about the physical, mental and emotional needs of dogs and why chaining a dog is inhumane and dangerous.

The Pet Savers Foundation
Their purpose is to extend the quality of life for homeless animals by promoting and advancing their humane treatment.  This is accomplished through national programs in support of America’s humane community. As a result, more and more companion animals are being saved and enjoying healthier, happier lives!

American Humane
American Humane is a well-established animal welfare organization with a reputation of dedicated leadership on the issues that matter. Their goal is to effect change by working with other organizations through cooperation and coalition building. American Humane protects animals through positive advocacy and action.

The Fund For Animals
"We speak for those who can't."

The Fund for Animals carries on the legacy of Cleveland Amory by using education, legislation, litigation, and hands-on care to protect animals from cruelty. The Fund's primary emphasis is on advocating and providing sanctuary for wildlife, whether the animals are endangered or thriving, charismatic or homely, native or exotic.

World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) works with more than 485 member organizations to raise the standards of animal welfare throughout the world.  Their vision is a world in which the welfare of animals is understood and respected by everyone, and protected by effective legislation.  Through their collaborative projects WSPA is Campaigning Against Cruelty by exposing animal abuse and enforcing stronger laws; their Animal Rescue teams are working to save abandoned or neglected animals or those stricken by disasters; and by Changing Hearts and Minds amongst people living and working with animals, WSPA is forging a safer future for all animals.

The Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights actively works toward the acquisition of rights for all nonhuman animals by educating the public and the veterinary profession about a variety of issues concerning nonhuman animal use. The AVAR is actively seeking reformation of the way society treats all nonhumans and an increase in environmental awareness, as well.

Benji’s Buddies is a cause-marketing program designed to measurably improve animal shelter conditions and get homeless pets adopted.
A percentage of the proceeds from the movie will go to the Benji Buddies Foundation.

The Directors of Animal Welfare (DAWS)
"Assisting local councils and stakeholders in Los Angeles with animal issues"

Last Chance for Animals (LCA) recognizes that animals have the ability to experience pain, and as such they deserve certain basic rights protecting them from pain caused by humans. LCA believes that non-human animals should not be subjected to suffering and exploitation by humans because alternatives exist for nearly every traditional "usage" of animals.

Visit ALLEY CAT ALLIES to learn how you can help make a difference for the feral cats that deserve to live.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a full management plan in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors in cities, towns, and rural areas are humanely trapped, then evaluated, vaccinated, and sterilized by veterinarians. Kittens and tame cats are adopted into good homes. Healthy adult cats too wild to be adopted are returned to their familiar habitat under the lifelong care of volunteers.

Become a TNR Advocate!

National Feral Cat Day is every October 16th!

Catnippers offers local services for feral cats and caregivers, including free or assisted spay/neuter services for "managed colonies". Get discount vouchers, loans of humane traps and more from this all-volunteer L.A. program.

FixNation is a non-profit organization operating the only free, full-time spay/neuter clinic in Los Angeles for homeless, stray and feral cats. They provide training and resources for Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs, and also provide reduced rate spay/neuter services for tame companion cats.

The AFFORDABLE CAT FENCE provides effective and humane cat containment by turning your yard into a secure enclosure. Rather than causing pain to your pets through electric fences or collars, our cat fence is a barrier of netting supported by heavy-gauge steel stanchions (unlike the wire brackets of the Cat Fence-In product) which attach to your existing fence. The barrier angles into your yard providing an overhang which cats will not climb. There is also a vertical component inhibiting the entry of other animals from outside your yard.

A humane alternative to declawing

Nail caps for your cat's claws-
Soft Paws are safe and non-toxic.
And so comfortable, most cats don't even know they're wearing them.

"Where Education Meets Rescue"

Animal Farm Foundation
Animal Farm Foundation's mission is to restore the image of American Pit Bull Terriers, and to protect them from discrimination and cruelty.

Animal Acres, was founded by Lorri Houston, who is considered the “pioneer” of the farmed animal sanctuary movement. In 1986, Lorri co-founded Farm Sanctuary®, which opened the country’s first shelter for farmed animals. For 18 years, she directed the group’s shelter and fundraising efforts.
Through her farm animal sanctuary efforts, Lorri has directly saved thousands of animals from the cruelties of factory farms, stockyards and slaughterhouses, and brought national attention to the plight of animals used for “food production.”
In 2005, Lorri Bauston formed Animal Acres, and established the Los Angeles Farm Animal Sanctuary & Compassionate Living Center. Working with a team of dedicated animal advocates, the organization succeeded in purchasing a beautiful 26-acre farm just 40 minutes from Los Angeles. The sanctuary has two large animal housing barns and a visitor center that surrounds a peaceful garden courtyard for public gatherings.

The Gentle Barn is a non-profit organization that teaches kindness and compassion by bringing children together with rescued large and small animals. They are host to group homes, foster homes, inner city kids, mental health care facilities and schools.

Farm Sanctuary’s mission involves the rescue and refuge of abused and neglected farm animals, and numerous campaign, education, and legislative efforts on behalf of them.

(Farm Animal Reform Movement) is a national, tax-exempt, educational organization advocating a plant-based diet and humane treatment of farmed animals through eight grassroots programs. It operates from the nation's capital with a staff of eight, through a grass-roots network of more than one thousand activists in all 50 states and several Canadian provinces. Please explore their web site and consider getting actively involved with FARM.

Companion Animal Protection Society

As the only national nonprofit dedicated exclusively to protecting companion animals, CAPS' foremost concern is the abuse and suffering of pet shop and puppy mill dogs. Founded in 1992, CAPS actively addresses this issue through investigations, education, media relations, legislative involvement, puppy mill dog rescues, consumer assistance and pet industry employee relations.

CAPS defines a puppy mill as a "commercial breeding facility that mass-produces puppies for resale through pet shops or individuals."

client endorsements of sitter Marr Nealon:

"I have known Marr for over 10 years and have come to realize she is no ordinary pet sitter. Her care and concern for my animals, my home and myself are far from normal and border on angelic. She has keys to my home and a gate opener for my complex and is willing to feed and care for my animals with the utmost love and responsibility. We are truly lucky to have her in our lives."  - Peggy Cox, Studio City

“No one has an endless supply of love for animals like Marr Nealon.…. I call her Auntie Marr because she treats your cherished pet like one of the family.” – Janeen Rae Heller, Burbank

“You're pets are in good hands with Marr!!!  Though almost always disliking strangers, my pet instantly fell in love with Marr...I use her service when I'm out of town or working long hours here in town, which gives me peace of mind knowing that my “baby” is being well-cared for. I have never known anyone who has the type of incredible rapport with ALL animals that Marr has....she's truly gifted.”  - Jerry Homan, Studio City Hills

“Marr Nealon has been pet-sitting our two Golden Retrievers and our indoor cat for over a year and our "boys" love her. She has been available on short notice and has proven to be conscientious and reliable. She not only takes care of our pets' physical needs but provides lots of love and attention as well. We no longer worry about having to pick up stressed-out dogs from a boarding kennel. I can highly recommend Marr to all people who are looking for a real animal lover as a pet sitter.”  – Elisabeth & Tom Trafton, Lake Hollywood

“I cannot tell you how comforting it is to go away and know you are there with my cats, my fish, my birds, and my home. I had a much better vacation because I knew all was in good hands.  My cat, Tiki, was so mellow & content when I got home.  She only gets like that when she’s totally happy & feeling secure & loved.  You are the best of the best!”
- Andrea McNichols, Hollywood Hills

"I have to go away for work alot and without Marr I don't know what i would do. My cats are very particular and Marr looks after them wondefully. I never worry about them anymore as I know my companion animals are in the best hands."  - Julia Orr, Glendale

"The most wonderful thing about Marr watching my dogs is when I return home they have been so loved and cared for, they haven't missed me!"  - Cristie George, Eagle Rock

“Marr has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty to make sure my two felines are well cared for whenever I’m out of town.”  - Nancy Dolan, Los Feliz

"It's a wonderful and comforting feeling to know that when I am away for a week my dog and cat are in great hands.  Marr treats my pets as she does her own; with warmth, love and a great sense of responsibility.  They don't come any better than Marr Nealon."
- Howard Ruben, Studio City

"My cats like Marr so much, that when I come home, they just yawn!"
    - Virginia Elwood-Akers, downtown lofts

"We very much appreciate the peace of mind that you give us in knowing that we can be away & have everybody in your capable hands."  - Curt Eddie, Hollywood Hills

"Marr has helped our pets feel comfortable, loved and relaxed while we go on vacation. She showers them with love, care and massages.  She goes the extra mile to take care of our dogs, and even picks up our mail, feeds our fish and scoops "presents" up in our yard - we have a great dane and an american bulldog, so this is no small feat!"
    - Jessica & Matt Irvine, Eagle Rock

“Thanks for everything.  We know when you are at our house, we don’t have to worry about anything.”  - Gail Seburn, Glendale

"I'm hoping to get away more next year since I now have such a great person to care for my babies."  - Diana Woods, Highland Park

"Marr is the best!!  My cat Lucky was a foundling.  I'm the only one he trusts.  The minute someone else walks in the house, he runs and hides. When I go away, he's always so very angry at me when I come home.  Once Marr started carrying for them when I was away, it was so different - he made a new friend!  NO ONE, in 10 years, has been able to do that. I call Marr my miracle worker - she brought Lucky out of his solitary shell. I'm so grateful to her.  And I have someone who I can trust completely, to respect my home and take loving gentle care of my beloved animals." --Sheryl Rafaell, Hollywood

FREE to a Good Home MOVIE
FREE to a Good Home is a dramatic feature, which follows one woman’s commitment to animals and her work in animal rescue.  Though fictitious, it takes a harsh, realistic look at the poignant lives and tragic deaths of just a few out of the millions of animals that fall victim to a system that does not work every year. This film provides an insider’s view of Animal Control, as well as the daily lives of the people committed to rescuing the animals from the streets, the shelters, the backyard breeders, and the homes of collectors.  Ultimately, the film offers compelling solutions to resolving this ongoing problem of animal overpopulation and abuse.  This film has been in the making out of the pockets of Animal Rescuers in Southern California.  Donations expanded nationwide after a fire claimed Writer/Director Judy Crozier's home and five pets.  A portion of the profits from this film will be donated to Animal Rescue.   The film, when completed, will be used to raise awareness and funding for rescue groups in Los Angeles, and throughout the country.

Why Does Volunteer Animal Transport Exist?

A swelling group of people who meet up in cyberspace are opposed
to what happens to millions of our nation's homeless animals once
their shelter stay expires. They deem the killing unacceptable and
unjust; and they're doing something about it.

The increasingly popular activity that saves these animals' lives
takes place every weekend, all over the country. The "legs," (as
they are known to the people who drive them) are vital to the
pre-arranged journeys that take rescued animals home.

A Rare Breed of Love

The true story of Baby and the mission
she inspired to help dogs everywhere

A Rare Breed of Love was inspired by "Baby," an abused puppy mill survivor who lived through a 9-year ordeal in order to become a "national spokesdog" to raise awareness about cruelty in the dog breeding industry.

This book is the first in the series of "The Healing Journey" works. Capturing the reader with powerful illustrations and raw emotions, this guidebook assists with the healing process one must face when a pet has died. The book is unique in its symbolism and style offering affirmations to replace the pain that one feels while still honoring the path of grief and healing. This gift-book style handbook is written by veterinarian Dr. KaLee Pasek, who has dedicated her practice to helping pets and their people through this difficult transition. A must read for anyone experiencing the loss of a beloved pet.

One at a Time, a compelling, heartfelt book by Diane Leigh and Marilee Geyer takes the reader through a typical week in a United States shelter. Through endearing pictures and gripping stories that contain both tragedy and miracles, this book reveals the reality of shelters, brings to light the roots of animal homelessness, and opens doors on how all of us can ensure more happy endings for animals that end up in shelters.

One at a Time: A Week in an American Animal Shelter is a project of No Voice Unheard, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote an ethic of compassion and respect for all living beings and the planet we share, and encourage a deeper awareness of the effects our actions have on the lives and existence of animals, the environment, and our fellow human beings.

K9 Fusion, Who Really Loves You? - Enhanced Music CD
Sven the Love Dog, plays each and every instrument on his debut album. The only exception is the drums, which are played by Sven's Dad, and fellow groove-monster, Steve Brooks. Every intense vocalization is produced by Sven, or one of his canine friends in this interpretive expression of the Dogs' creative process. It's REAL, it's DANGEROUS, face it, this Dog's the SHIH TZU!
Enhanced CD contains a video of the making of K9 Fusion. See for yourself as Sven pounds the piano, claw-picks his guitar, and gnashes his teeth on bass strings with the ferocity of Hendrix himself.

After a long and productive life, Sven sadly passed away in January of 2005. His work and spirit lives on through his many television, film and musical recordings. Please read more about Sven's Story.
